ABB Introduces eMine™ Robot Automated Connection Device: An Innovative Charging Solution for Mining Trucks

ABB has unveiled its latest technological innovation, the eMine™ Robot Automated Connection Device (ACD), which serves as a cutting-edge power charging solution for electric mining trucks. This fully automated connection device is designed to complement the ABB eMine™ FastCharge system, enhancing the interoperability and functionality of electric mining truck connections.

Developed in partnership with Boliden, BHP, and Komatsu, the Robot ACD aims to enhance safety and operational efficiency in mining. This equipment will be presented to the public for the first time at MINExpo 2024, hosted at Komatsu’s booth.

At MINExpo 2024, ABB will showcase its new technology demonstrator, which facilitates safe and effective high-power charging, paving the way toward the future of all-electric mines. The eMine™ Robot ACD is engineered to work alongside the ABB eMine™ FastCharge solution, fostering greater compatibility and synergy between connections and interfaces for electric mining trucks.

As a founding member of the CharIN taskforce focused on establishing electrical standards within the mining sector, ABB is committed to accelerating the adoption of electrical interface solutions in the industry. The Robot ACD represents a significant advancement in this endeavor, enabling reliable and efficient truck charging without requiring human interaction. Built to endure the challenging conditions found in mining environments, this fully automated, interoperable connection device is ruggedized for durability.

The technology is designed to integrate smoothly into existing mining operations, with its scalability and interoperability ensuring compatibility with both current and future mining trucks, as well as various connection mechanisms and interfaces.

Presently, the technology is undergoing testing at ABB’s laboratory in Sweden, with plans for real-world trials at Boliden’s Aitik site commencing in the fourth quarter of this year. ABB is collaborating with industry partners Boliden, BHP, and Komatsu for initial field trials to address the necessary technical specifications.

The Robot ACD will debut at the MINExpo 2024 event in Las Vegas, showcased by Komatsu and ABB at booth 7132 in the Central Hall from September 24th to 26th.

MINExpo 2024 coincides with the three-year anniversary of the official launch of ABB’s comprehensive eMine™ framework, designed to expedite the energy transition within the mining industry.
